New to Reformer Pilates? What to Expect at Your First Class

Reformer Pilates can look a little intimidating when you first see the equipment, but your first class doesn’t have to feel intimidating at all.

At Pilates By Valerie, we believe learning the Reformer should be comfortable, supportive, and progressive. You don’t need previous Pilates experience, and you don’t need to already be strong or flexible to begin.

What is a Pilates Reformer?

The Reformer is a Pilates apparatus that uses a moving carriage, springs, straps, and a footbar to provide both resistance and support. By adjusting the springs and your position, exercises can be modified for different bodies, abilities, and experience levels.

What Happens in Your First Class?

Your instructor will introduce you to the Reformer and explain how to use it safely. You’ll learn basic positions, how the springs work, and how to move the carriage with control.

You can also expect plenty of instruction and modifications along the way. At PBV, our small classes allow us to pay attention to each client rather than expecting everyone to move the same way.

You “Don’t Have to Keep Up”

One of the biggest concerns beginners have is whether they’ll be able to keep up with everyone else.

Pilates isn’t about keeping up. It’s about learning to move your body with control, building strength gradually, and becoming more confident with each session.

You are encouraged to work at your own pace and use modifications when you need them.

What Should You Wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Grip socks are recommended for Reformer classes because they provide additional traction on the equipment.

Most importantly, come ready to learn. You don’t need to know the exercises before you arrive-that’s what your instructor is there for.
